CDC: 108 cases of acute flaccid myelitis this year

Federal health officials are investigating a spike in cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) and asking clinicians to remain vigilant. There have been 108 confirmed cases in 36 states this year through October, most of which have been children under 18.

Transverse myelitis is a rare inflammatory disease causing injury to the spinal cord with a focal inflammation of the entire thickness of this. It associates varying degrees of weakness, sensory alterations, and autonomic dysfunction. It is estimated 1400 new cases per year. This disease affects people of all ages, and its causes are really variable. It is important to difuse its knowledge in order to get an early diagnosis and treatment for decreasing its sequels.
